The home was originally designed for composer Russell Garcia and his wife Gina, according to Vogue Australia. Garcia is known for composing soundtracks for movies such as The Jersey Boys, as well as the theme songs he wrote for TV shows like Rawhide and CBS Reports.

It was purchased by Bill Damaschke, a former executive at DreamWorks, and John McIlwee, an entertainment business manager, in 2002 for about $1.2 million, Mansion Global reported.

Ron Radziner, one of the principal architects at Marmol Radziner, told the Los Angeles Times Magazine in 2018 that the firm's goal was to make the home "liveable for the next two hunderd years" to avoid having the house torn down. It took the firm about 12 months to fully preserve the home.

"Our goal was never to do a slavish restoration, but to create something that maintained the spirit of Lautner's work and also made sense for the 21st century," Radziner told the magazine.
